How Does Fluoride Benefit My Teeth?
Each day, the protective outer layer of the teeth – the enamel – loses minerals. Typically, this
happens when acids attack the teeth. Acids come in the form of foods and beverages, as well as oral
bacteria, which release acids when they feed on the sugars we eat.
Thankfully, the enamel can remineralize when we consume foods that contain certain minerals, such as
calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. Because of the benefits of fluoride in particular, many cities
across the U.S. have added fluoride to drinking water.
Because people drink non-fluoridated, bottled water and don’t always get enough enamel-strengthening
minerals from the foods they eat, many don’t get the level of fluoride they need.
Therefore, it’s essential to receive regular fluoride treatments from their Northridge dentist.
These treatments provide a higher (yet safe!) dose of fluoride to remineralize the teeth and help
prevent dental decay.
